NILAND COMPANY HISTORY

The Niland Company was formed in 1972 as a Texas Corporation by Thomas M. Niland. He is a graduate of the University of Texas at El Paso and the University of Texas School of Law at Austin.

The firm began by brokering and importing architectural products from Mexico and Italy, primarily to municipal and commercial construction projects. This evolved into an outdoor street light and site furnishing business, which has supplied architectural products of nostalgic nature to cities and commercial projects throughout the United States, France and Japan.

The specialties required for the production of light standards and site furnishings include the processing of raw aluminum, steel, cast iron, production of plastic globes and lenses, H.I.D. wiring and electrostatic painting and powder coat painting. All light standards are listed with Underwriters Laboratories and are subjected to periodic inspections by that company. Niland Company now sells over 1,000 separate and distinct street lighting and site furnishing products, easily customizable to over 100,000 distinct combinations.  We specialize in converting historical designs from the past into performance driven, "dark sky" compliant luminaires.

In 1985 the need to manufacture O.E.M. plastic globes and lenses for the street light business became obvious. This led the Company into rotational molding. Niland Company's plastic product line has now evolved into custom work for major automotive, heavy truck and bus manufacturers.

The Company also manufactures its own line of polycarbonate refractor globes and UV-stabilized decorative planters as well as custom molding of patented equestrian training products and items for Government Services Administration under its Roto-Vac Plastics Division.

Mr. Niland is the past President of the International Association of Rotational Molders (ARM), a world wide Association of more than 500 companies from 44 different countries.

Jack Niland began working for The Niland Company as Vice President of Sales in 1995. His main responsibility is in the management of the companies more than 82 independent sales representative agencies around the world. These agencies account for 70 percent of the companies total outdoor lighting sales. Customers include Municipalities, Utilities, Electrical Distributors, Contractors, and Developers.

Matthew Niland began working for The Niland Company in 1998 as Vice President of the companies custom Powder Coating and Finishing Division. The regional market for powder coating is derived mainly from National Metal Stampers servicing Fortune 500, Consumer Electrical product companies across the border in Mexico.

The Niland Company core business has always been focused on the manufacture of outdoor decorative street lighting products. The need for specialized processes revolving around the manufacture of these products has evolved into these other areas of expertise including:

FAQs

- Municipal Series Cast Iron and Steel poles
Our High end line is featured in the Municipal series and is fabricated using tapered fluted steel coupled with decorative cast Iron Clamshell bases. Clamshell bases are split bases that wrap around our tapered fluted steel poles. The tapered fluted steel poles are anchored directly to the foundation with 4 L- Type Anchor bolts. The decorative base cover is not structural. Upgradeable options for this line include a hot dipped galvanized finish prior to the custom color Powdercoated finish. This provides a superior protection against corrosion resistance. These products are usually sold to municipalities and utilities.

- Niland Series Cast Aluminum
Our Niland Series Cast Aluminum products are considered our High end line within our cast aluminum family. These products offer the same style and versatility of our municipal line but are scaled down. Cast aluminum is a more affordable option. This series is fabricated with large decorative cast aluminum bases which are matted to 5-inch deep-fluted extruded shafts, variable in heights of up to 16 feet. This series is flexible because the shafts can be cut to any length you may require. These shafts are also available in a 5-inch smooth version as well. These two shaft options are stocked here in our factory and can be turned around quickly if needed. The last shaft option within this series is our formed tapered and fluted aluminum shaft. This is a more affordable way of achieving the look of a tapered and fluted pole for considerably less than an all cast aluminum pole base and shaft. We do have a minimum order requirement on the formed tapered fluted shaft of 20 units. For this reason we always recommend our customers use our standard 5-inch fluted extruded shafts. This is our most popular product line.

The Niland Developer series is a more affordable line and features scaled down versions of decorative cast aluminum bases coupled with our 4 inch fluted extruded shafts. These shafts are variable in height ranges of up to 16 feet. These designs are affordable and offer our customers a competitive and decorative alternative to standard shoebox style fixtures. Quality is not sacrificed with this series; the only difference between the 4-inch pole line and the 5-inch pole line is the scale and size of the complete pole.

- Options
Options include photo eyes for turning the units off and on automatically at dusk, along with electric outlets in the poles for additional power sources needed for Christmas lights wrapped around the poles, banner arms, basket hangers, street sign paddles, and 45 degree flag pole holders. Borosilicate glass refractors are used for glare control and house side shields. Refractor globes are used for up light control and can be certified as cut-off where dark sky covenants are in place.

- Light Distribution patterns and controlled optics
This refers to our options utilizing our borosilicate glass refractors or our acorn style refractor globes. These units offer distribution patterns which control light output. They are classified as type III or type V (Type Three or Type Five). Type III is used for sidewalk and roadway applications where the light output flows up and down the street. These distribution patterns are long and narrow bands of light. This option is considered a "house side shield" because it keeps the light out of windows by redirecting the light output in a long and narrow pattern. Type V or Type five spreads light in a 360-degree circular pattern and is used to illuminate large open areas as well as controlling glare for higher wattages. Horizontal segmented reflectors are also available for specification purposes in DARK SKY environments where up-light control is required.

- Lamp types
There are several lamp types you can choose from. The least expensive option is a standard incandescent socket which utilizes regular household light bulbs. 900 hours of lamp life is common with lamp changes required every 4 months. There is no up charge for this option. We recommend utilizing our HID ballasted light kits. These ballast kits are available in metal halide (MH), which is bright white light, or High Pressure Sodium (HPS), which is bright orange light. These ballast kits are preferred because they run more efficiently, reduce your electric bill when compared to incandescent fixtures, offer much higher light levels and output, and have lamp light averages around 15,000 hours. Running 8 hours a night for 365 days a year would make you have to change out the lamp every 5 years. These ballast kits are around $149 dollars per head not including the lamp. Lamps can be purchased at all home improvement centers for around 15 dollars each. We normally dont include these lamps because they are easily breakable during the transportation of our crates.

Our last and most expensive option is a brand new ballasting technology called QL INDUCTION Lighting. These ballast kits are the most efficient on the electric bill and boast a 100,000-hour lamp life. Running these 365 days a year for 12 hours a day would yield a 24-year lamp life! These operate using unique radio frequencies. This is our most expensive option but is virtually maintenance free. Average cost per head is around $459 per socket and includes the lamp. We do need you to specify proper wattage and the correct voltage which is being utilized on your site of installation. If you have multiple voltages on site we can specify Multi-Tap ballast which carries 120/240/277/ or 480 voltages in one kit. The proper lead can then be pulled from the ballast.

- Powdercoated Finishes and Pretreatment
We powdercoat, as is standard, all of our products. This process begins with our poles going through a phosphate acid etch pretreatment, followed by a de-Ionized water rinse, and then a chemical conversion coating sealer is applied and dried on to the pole. Our products are pretreated through 8 individual stages of preparation and cleaning. Every drop of water used in the process has been made in house utilizing a combination or reverse osmosis and de-ionization. All dissolved solids are completely removed. We also produce our own clean compressed air for powder application and dry off. All air made on site is passed through 3 stages of condensation tanks and filters and drying chiller units, thus removing any oil or water that could contaminate the pretreated surface. Our products are then conveyed to a powder coating booth where the powder is electro-statically applied. Our line is positively charged and the powder application guns are negatively charged. The powder is blown on through automatic guns which attract to the pole like a magnet and envelopes the entire surface area of the unit uniformly. The finished product is conveyed into an oven and baked at a temperature of no less than 420 degrees. It is an extremely durable finish designed not to chalk or fade for many years. We like to refer to it as "painted Armour".

- Our Liquid Finished Products

Liquid Paint Finishes are occasionally standard in different parts of the country. This process is more labor intensive, more time consuming, and more difficult to accomplish. However, our process is designed to provide a maintenance free coating for 20 years service. We start with PPG brand DTR two-part epoxy primer with a minimum of 5 mils, dry film thickness. The finish coat is then applied with two coats of PPG Pitthane Ultra Urethane Enamel for an additional 5 mils of protection. 10 mils of complete protection are offered with this finish. It is an upgrade finish designed for areas where salt and corrosion is a concern. The investment is well worth the extra charge if your poles are to placed in a hostile environment. Sprinklers and reclaimed water are the number one cause of premature paint failure due to the high acidity of reclaimed water near golf courses and parks.

- Shipping

Our shipping policy is normally FOB El Paso, TX., unless otherwise negotiated. Our products are custom and unique per order. Freight can be quoted as prepaid and added to the invoice.

- Pricing and Quotations

Pricing can be obtained by contacting us through our website by submitting a quote. A qualified agent from Niland or a sales representative for your region will contact you to discuss your project needs and assist you on the details. When you fill out your information a lead is generated that we receive and is then forwarded to a sales agent automatically. You can log back into our website using your email address to keep track of all your existing and past projects. Only Niland has made keeping track of all these specifications this easy for our customers. Try the "Project Builder feature of our site and eliminate any confusion you may have down the road. We will store your quotes online for you indefinitely. Ordering replacement parts is as easy as filling in your email to view what you have ordered or had quoted in the past.

- Delivery Times

Standard lead times are 4-6 weeks on all cast aluminum products. Our line is built to order and can be produced with over 100,000 different product combinations giving each of your projects a unique and distinctive look. We do have a quick ship section that is part of our standard style line which can be expedited if ordered as a standard package. Please notify the factory of RUSH delivery instances for a quicker turnaround. Under normal circumstances we can accommodate any request. RUSH orders normally require a prepayment so we can prepay our suppliers to expedite orders and place us at the top of their lists.

Steel poles and Cast Iron poles normally require a longer lead time approaching 8-10 weeks because of the nature of fabricating tapered fluted steel shafts. It is a time consuming process and not a stockable commodity.
